2017 Audi A4 Review

The fifth generation of A4 or ninth if you include the 80 was unveiled in June 2015. It was larger but also lighter about 260 pounds than its predecessor. Not long after that, there are a number of changes that makes the 2017 Audi A4 even more interesting. Although design and interior aren’t among them, it is almost crucial to look at the new A4 if you look for the car in the luxury sedan segment. So let’s begin.

2017 Audi A4 – Specs

We won’t talk about design or interior. But with grown exterior, it’s crucial to say its measurements. Length is 186.1 inches, width is 72.5 inches, height is 56.2 inches while the wheelbase is 111 inches long. So more comfy interior and good drivability which we expect from any luxury car. While talking about driveability, it is noticeable that more and more car makers are cutting manual transmissions in their vehicles. But for driving enthusiasts, one important thing is that the Audi is bringing back manual transmission to its A4 lineup. So if you want to take control of the gearbox, six-speed manual transmission is available on all trim levels, and there are three of them.

Before we continue, if you opt for manual gearbox and AWD system, you can further have the Sport plus package. It comes with 18-inch, S line leather interior with sports seats, flat-bottom steering wheel, and Audi’s Dynamic steering with adaptive sports suspension.

2017 Audi A4 – Powertrain

2017 Audi A4 comes with Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige trim levels. For U.S. market only available engine option is 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder TFSI engine with 252 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. It is available with FWD or Audi’s Quattro AWD system. If you’re not fond of changing gears yourself, there is seven-speed S Tronic dual clutch automatic transmission.

2017 Audi A4 – TFSI Ultra Engine

Another thing is that famous TFSI engine gets Ultra “add-on”. When you think about fuel consumption as number one factor, Toyota Prius, and other hybrid or electric vehicles pop into the mind. But if you’re not fancy with that type of cars, then Audi’s engine might do the trick for you. It is same 2.0-liter TFSI engine, but with 190 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque. It’s not only the reduce of power, this engine utilizes a combustion method with shorter compression and longer expansion phases.

So, fuel economy for this engine with auto transmission and front-wheel drive is 27 mpg in the city, 37 mpg on the highway, and 31 mpg combined. If you look at other competitive luxury sedans like BMW 320i Mercedes-Benz C300, Lexus IS200t, and Volvo S60 T5, it is noticeable that 2017 Audi A4 with TFSI Ultra has more favorable fuel consumption. But that’s not without the cost, and the cost is speed. From 0 to 60 mph, it will take 7.1 seconds and that’s  more than second and a half slower than with stronger engine.

2017 Audi A4 – Premium Plus

This trim is much more attractive than Premium. It is packed with more features, such as full LED headlights and 18-inch 5-spoke wheels. You’ll also have S line appearance we mentioned earlier, and for entertainment purposes, there is Bang & Olufsen 3D Sound System with 19 speakers, 16-channel amplifier, and 755 watts. It also comes with Parking system plus with rear view camera. With TFSI Ultra engine you’ll also have Audi’s advanced key – keyless start, stop and entry with hands-free trunk lid release.

2017 Audi A4 – Prestige

With top notch trim instead of the standard instrument cluster, there is Audi’s virtual cockpit. It is 12.3-inch LCD fully digital instrument cluster. It also has MMI voice activated navigation and 8.3-inch center display. While speaking of displays, Heads up display with navigation and assistance systems information is also there. As for the safety, in addition to Pre sense, there is also side assist with Rear cross traffic alert and Vehicle exit assist. For this trim Parking system plus comes with a top view camera. This is the trim level that doesn’t let you have TFSI Ultra engine. But who minds the fuel consumption, when looking at the highest trims?
