2017 Audi Q7 Review

All car manufacturers saw the benefits of weight reduction rather than constantly tweaking and upgrading engines. Audi is no exception and new 2017 Audi Q7 has lost more than just a few pounds. But later about that. Let’s first say that Audi’s team worked six years to get second-generation even better. They weren’t in a hurry since Q7 received nice acceptance with over 500.000 sold units worldwide.

So the main news as we said before is weight reduction. This German car manufacturer states that new Q7 is 717 pounds lighter than its predecessor. Just by the look of it, it lost a few inches in overall dimensions, but that alone isn’t enough to shed that much weight. The trick is that Audi dropped the off-road centric platform in favor of actual passenger one. The word is about second-generation MLB platform. That alone reduced the weight of 2017 Audi Q7 by 148 pounds while further 221 pounds were shed from suspension. And with heavy use of aluminum and other lightweight materials on the hood, doors fenders, in other words mostly everywhere, they achieved what they wanted in the first place.

2017 Audi Q7 – Specs

We won’t talk much about exterior design since Q7 is one of the best-looking SUVs on the market. We already mentioned that dimensions are somewhat smaller but the overall appearance is more aggressive with a new grille and boxy fenders. With optional 20 or 21-inch wheels, it really gives you the feel of a sturdy vehicle capable of anything. With adaptive air suspension, it isn’t just more comfortable it also delivers sportier character. That’s not all, with optional four-wheel steering system (Q7 is the only SUV with it) not only it improves stability at high speeds on the highway, it also reduces a turning circle in the city.

Default drive is all wheel while torque is 40:60 ratio in favor of rear wheels. But torque can also be shifted to as much as 70 percent up front or 85 percent to the rear if needed. We also must mention since 2018 Audi Q7 is an off-roader that ground clearance can be raised to 9.6 inches.

2017 Audi Q7 – Interior

What to say when it comes to the interior of 2018 Audi Q7? Let’s just start, it’s stylish, elegant, functional, luxurious. We think we said enough, but let’s just be a little more specific. It has a space for seven occupants in three rows of seats and not only there is enough space in front and middle but rear seats also have enough space. The only downside is that entering and exiting from the third row can be somewhat tricky. On the dashboard of 2017 Audi Q7, there is 12.3-inch TFT instrument display that maybe has a bit too much information available. For entertainment purposes, Bose audio system will definitely do the trick, but for more demanding buyers there is far more expensive Bang & Olufsen system.

2017 Audi Q7 – Powertrains

For the US market, there are two 3.0-liter V6 engines. One is TDI with 272 horsepower and another one is supercharged gasoline engine with 333 horsepower. Since new Q7 is lighter and there is new ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox we can surely expect better numbers. In other words, drinking habits are more acceptable. With diesel option, you can get 32 mpg on the highway. But that supercharged gasoline V6 is more thirsty than the diesel option. You can get 19 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway.
