2017 BMW X1 Review, Price

Even when it’s the only vehicle with FWD in BMW lineup, this German carmaker put all former ads that told us how front-wheel drive sucks into oblivion. But nevertheless, the only BMW FWD, the X1 is still fun to drive. Currently in the second generation, and pretty young, the 2017 BMW X1 didn’t bring many changes.

2017 BMW X1 – Design

The X1 looks bigger than it really is since it’s based on Mini platform. Despite being the smallest SUV in the BMW lineup, it weighs 3.708 pounds. It has a sharp-looking design with angular headlights with cornering lights that are fully LED only with Premium package selected. Halogen headlights come as standard. Also below the sculpted hood, there is taller kidney grille. On the rear there are L-shaped rear lights, now they are rather more streamlined. There are nine metallic exterior paints available for $700 extra, but Estoril Blue only comes with a selection of M Sport package. There are also two nonmetallic that comes as standard.

2017 BMW X1 – Packages

The interior features that come at no extra price might give the feel that it’s not so a luxury vehicle that we are accustomed to. But it can be further enhanced with a selection of Premium, Luxury package or even M Sport package. The Luxury package comes with $1.550 extra and it’s a combination of wooden details and chrome accents with various types of leather upholstery. Premium package emphasizes on the panoramic sunroof, auto-dimming mirrors, lumbar support and ambient lighting. And it comes at a price of $3.250. While first two packages emphasize on improving comfort and luxury level, with M Sport ($2.450) buyer also gets some mechanical upgrades. And the most valuable ones are an aerodynamic kit, sport transmission, and sports suspension. The other features include sports seats and M Steering wheel.

The tech features include standard gauge instrument cluster and 6.5-inch infotainment screen. But more favorable is certainly the Technology package. Although it costs $2.550, it includes navigation on 8.8-inch iDrive screen and touchpad controller, full-color heads-up display, enhanced USB and Bluetooth with smartphone integration. For even more convenience, there is Driver assistance plus package which comes with many features like parking assistant, rearview camera, lane departure warning, front collision warning, etc.

2017 BMW X1 – Powertrain

The 2017 BMW X1 comes in the U.S. market with only one powertrain. Unlike Europe where X1 comes with a 3-cylinder turbo engine, The U.S. buyers will get a turbo 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that develops 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. On this side of the Atlantic Ocean, there is no manual available. But eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission works the job efficiently. FWD of the 2017 BMW X1 can be bypassed with a selection of BMW’s all-wheel drive system. The xDrive comes with $2.000 extra. There is no much need to talk about the safety of this vehicle. Because it is enough to be said that 2017 BMW X1 received Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS. Front crash prevention was rated Advanced but only with optional equipment.

2017 BMW X1 – Price

Although the sDrive (FWD) X1 starts only at $33.100 without handling and destination of $950, the price of this sub-compact crossover can easily skyrocket-high with a further selection of packages and features. It can easily surpass the $47.000. But you can always look at its main rivals. Those are Lexus NX, Mercedes-Benz GLA-class, Audi Q3, Infiniti QX30, and Lincoln MKC.
