Chrysler basically flooded minivan segment back in 1990 with Town & Country model. It revolutionized family travel, but now it’s just not that popular anymore. Younger people, although in a need for bigger vehicle choose more luxurious SUV rather than a full-size van. FCA hopes to change that with new 2017 Chrysler Pacifica. In other words, the new luxury model will change thirty years present Town & Country model and is practically based on 700C concept that was unveiled at the 2012 North American International Auto Show. In other words, Chrysler is hoping it will reinvent the minivan. It isn’t, of course, just the name that they changed (although they just took it from discontinued crossover). Firstly it’s exterior design.
2017 Chrysler Pacifica – New Design
Well, when it comes to that we need to say that designers did their job. Can you by the look of it tell that it’s the minivan? No. The design is really something else, combining every piece into a design masterpiece. They just abandoned carry-over design and retro look. You could say that it is expected, since in 2015, FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne announced that it would invest $2 billion in developing a new minivan.
The front somewhat resembles Chrysler 200 sedan (that will probably be discontinued in 2017 or 2018). Curved chrome lines blend in perfectly around grille with an emblem on it and now more modern headlights. They have LED daylights running lights underlining the bottom. Below there is thicker chrome curve outlining mesh and fog lights. On the contrary to the short hood, the windshield is vast for better visibility.
On the roof of 2017 Chrysler Pacifica, there are stylish bar rails that will carry extra luggage. With stylish alloy wheels and carefully placed lines from front to the end, it really is looking very nice. Chrysler is also changing the minivan’s sliding doors, they will be aluminum and hands-free, opening automatically when the fob holder waves under them. The rear end is no different than the rest. A liftgate is activated by a “kick” under the door so you won’t have to bother to putt the bags on the ground just to open the trunk.
Another crucial thing we must mention is that new Pacifica will have a 10-color palette. Talk about variety. We could say that with this years ahead design, they really reinvented the van, and will surely draw the audience away from SUV back to minivan segment.
2017 Chrysler Pacifica – Functional Interior
As for the interior, there is just nothing bad about it. On higher trim levels you could have leather seats with heating and cooling option. On top of that, there are buttons to ease folding of two rows of seats behind. With that, you get extremely large cargo capacity that you won’t find in any car from crossover segment.
Behind the leather wrapped steering wheel, there is full-color TFT display. It has every information needed. On the 8.4-inch touch-screen, you will control most of the vehicles functions. And not only that, by the latest report, it will have Owner’s manual and user guide so you can quickly find what you’re looking for. In the rear, there is high-tech hardware too. Passengers will be able to enjoy two 10-inch touch-screens and play movies or connect gaming consoles. In 2017 Chrysler Pacifica you will also be able to connect your smart devices and surf the web on big screens. Besides those, there are two available audio systems to choose from. One is 13-speaker Alpine and the other is 20-speaker Harman system.
2017 Chrysler Pacifica – Two Drivetrains
There are two standard options that will move the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica. The gasoline-powered engine will be standard, while the other option is Plug-in Hybrid. So first it is the first hybrid minivan in the US market. The gasoline engine is one thing that got carried over from outgoing Town & Country model. It is the same 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, but for 2017 Chrysler Pacifica it has some slight improvement. Four more horsepower are added and 2 lb-ft of torque. In other words, it’s the most powerful one in this segment now reaching 287 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque.
The other more interesting one, has 16kWh Lithium-ion battery that has a range of 30 miles before runs dry. The battery can be fully recharged in two hours using a 240-volt plug-in system. FCA stands that hybrid model will achieve at least 80 mpg in fuel economy. Either one of those won’t be using old six-speed transmission, but new nine-speed automatic CVT.
2017 Chrysler Pacifica – Trims And Price
There are five available trim levels for 2017 Chrysler Pacifica. And those are
- LX ………………………….. $28,595
- Touring …………………….. $30,495
- Touring-L ………………….. $34,495
- Touring-L Plus ……………. $37,895
- Limited …………………….. $42,495
You can see that the price for the base model is $1.400 lower than the last generation Town & Country. But on the other hand, it can go pretty high with later trim levels. The main competitors of this model will be Honda Odyssey and Kia Sedona. New Pacifica is available as of spring this year, while Plug-in Hybrid will arrive in the second half of 2016.
