2017 Dodge Grand Caravan Review

Everything ends sooner or later. After thirty years of its existence, Dodge Grand Caravan will stop being produced in December 2016. The reason for that lies in 2017 Chryslers Pacifica which will succeed the Caravan. Grand Caravan sales in the U.S. were already starting to fall, coming, for the first time in the last six years under 100k mark selling “only” 97.141 units in 2015. Since it is discontinued sales numbers aren’t important anymore for Dodge. But 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan will be sold until its stock depletion. So this is the final chance to park this minivan in your garage. Let’s just say that Pacifica is maybe better, but the price of top trim Dodge Grand Caravan is roughly the starting price of Pacifica.

2017 Dodge Grand Caravan – Design

Design is always going forward with more and more futuristic look with daring lines and more aggressive appearance. But throughout its life, Caravan stayed loyal to its boxy design. On front fascia, there is a large cross-like section that divides mesh grille. On both sides there are extremely large headlight, while on lower portion there is thinner mesh for air intake. Round fog lights come on both sides. But on the sides glass surfaces really dominate, so there is good visibility from the inside. On the rear end tailgate slopes down between again quite large rear lights. But design we think, although important, doesn’t play the key role. Minivan is all about utility. Carrying maximum number of passengers and cargo.

2017 Dodge Grand Caravan – Interior

And that’s where Caravan’s Stow N Go seating system. 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan has a total seating of seven. The third row has power fold option but mentioned the system is the only one that allows flat-seat folding for second and third-row seating. That is praiseworthy innovation since no other minivan competitor offers flat-folding of the second-row seating (Pacifica does). When seats are in use that compartment that swallows the seats provide extra space. So either way (seats in use or not), there is tremendous amount of cargo storage. Of course, to achieve that, seats are thinner, therefore slightly reducing comfort. The main problem of the interior and exterior, despite some upgrades throughout the years is that looks and feels old. The interior also looks cheap with lower quality plastics and other outdated materials.

2017 Dodge Grand Caravan – Safety

Even if we take all the cons aside, there is one more thing that nowadays must be a top priority. Since minivan’s main priority is the transport of (usually) your kids, safety must be on the next level. And that isn’t the case with Grand Caravan. When the fifth generation was introduced for 2008 model year, it managed to obtain all “G” (good) ratings in crash tests. The earlier model was a mix of “A” (acceptable) and “P” (poor) rating. But that was also the year IIHS introduced the “nightmare” for every car maker, the small overlap crash test. Since then, Grand Caravan always had “P” (poor) rating in mentioned test. Successor Pacifica obtained Top Safety Pick+ award with scoring all good ratings and superior in front crash prevention.

2017 Dodge Grand Caravan – Engine

Nevertheless which trim a buyer chose (SE, SE Plus, SXT, and GT), 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan comes with one engine option. But that’s not a problem. Since the word is about powerful, award-winning, Pentastar V6 engine. This 3.6-liter powertrain produces 283 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Six-speed automatic transmission does the job of shifting, while maximum towing capacity amounts 3.600 pounds, while Trailer Sway Control comes standard on all trims. FWD is the only type of drive available. And estimated fuel economy is 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.
