We all know the look of Jeep Compass when it came out in 2006. Criticized for its look, this crossover didn’t achieve success. And low sale numbers are a testimony to that. Only after 5 years when Jeep finally decided to do a much-needed facelift, sales were tripled. The price starting just below $20.000 mark also influenced that. But after a decade, next generation Compass is here. The only thing that 2017 Jeep Compass has in common with its predecessor is the name. It also comes as a replacement for Patriot. Although it will be officially revealed at Los Angeles Auto Show in November, some info came from South America in Brazil where will production of Compass take place.
2017 Jeep Compass – Design
Let’s say first that carmaker built Compass on Small Wide platform that is also used on Fiat 500X and Jeep Renegade. When it comes to design, 2017 Jeep Compass is a mix of its other siblings. Front end resembles Grand Cherokee and D-pillar which is the only one painted in color body looks the same as on Renegade. Wheel arches look the same as on Cherokee and they have black molding to protect from everyday gravel. Engineers managed to get good visibility with HID projector beams and low positioned fog lights. There are also LED daytime running lights. On the end, the rear window is outlined with chrome. And down below is twin exhaust pipes. All that will ride on 18-inch alloy wheels.
In other words, design is more appealing or the eyes especially if you look at first Compass before the facelift. But the details in the design of 2017 Jeep Compass will solely depend on the trim level and there are total four. The base is Sport, mid-level is Longitude (For U.S. market it’s Latitude), for the luxurious level there is Limited, and for those who wants off-road capability there is Trailhawk.
2017 Jeep Compass – Interior
The interior is completely redesigned with heavy resemble of Cherokee. On the dashboard behind the steering wheel, there is TFT gauge cluster display. On the center stack carmaker placed 8.4-inch Uconnect updated system with A/C vents on each side. Controls or heating, ventilation and air conditioning are right above the USB port Aux jack and 12-volt socket. Next to those is AWD rotary knob. For entertainment purpose, there is Beats Premium Audio system with 506-watt digital amplifier. 2017 Jeep Compass will have a two-tone leather interior with red stitching. We can also expect more space in the rear seats and more luggage space. For complete enjoyment, there is also Jeep’s Command-View panoramic sunroof. But as the look of it there is no compass in it as would you expect when you know the name of this model.
2017 Jeep Compass – Powertrain
Only official info is that 2017 Jeep Compass will be offered with 17 (seventeen) powertrains in the worldwide market. It’s the only official info because it is not yet revealed which powertrains will arrive in the U.S. market. But we can always speculate. In mind are two engines. One might be turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine or 2.4-liter one. And for the upscale new Jeep’s turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder Hurricane engine might be on the offer. Some reports even suggest that a 3.2-liter V6 from Cherokee might find its way under the hood of new Compass. As for the transmission, most likely is that a nine-speed automatic will be used. Nothing is also said about drive options, but the base should be FWD, while optional and on some trims as standard will be 4WD.
2017 Jeep Compass – Previous Safety
Although it’s too early to talk about safety ratings of this car, for those whose primary concern is safety, they might want to look for something else based on the previous ratings. The IIHS didn’t crack Compass in every way possible, but EuroNcap did. And their rating is just two out of five stars. The NHTSA also did and it rated Compass with four stars. But tests they do aren’t that rigorous, will opt for the EuroNcap. So, we hope that Jeep took this into consideration and that new Compass will be much safer for every occupant inside.
2017 Jeep Compass – Possible Price
Pricing options will be available closer to the launch of this model. But if all above is took into consideration, 2017 Jeep Compass will squeeze in between Cherokee and Renegade with starting price of around $21.000. Sales will start in the first half of 2017. Honda CR-V and Ford Escape are its two main competitors.
