2017 Toyota Land Cruiser Review

One of the most popular car manufacturers in the world, Toyota can’t really brag about sale figures when it comes to Land Cruiser. Yes, it has extremely long heritage, dating back to 1957 (Toyota’s longest) but it just isn’t that popular. In the last five years (2011 – 2015) Toyota sold 13.484 Land Cruisers in the U.S. and they really can’t be proud of that number. There might be several reasons for that, and we’ll get to the most obvious one at the end of this review. Let’s say first that J200 was released in 2007 so you can expect that 2017 Toyota Land Cruiser would be next generation. But no, for 2016 model year it received a major overhaul. And the truth is that new one returned unchanged.

2017 Toyota Land Cruiser – Design

So, heavy use of chrome is clearly visible on the front fascia. It is almost as the design of 2017 Toyota Land Cruiser is going backward instead forward, and that can be a reason for sales to drop even lower. Nevertheless, LED headlights are somewhat better looking and they improve, just by a point, overall impression. On front bumper, fog lights are also LED. As for exterior color palette, you have six different colors to choose from. The car sits on 18-inch alloy wheels with 8.9-inch ground clearance. While already talking about measurements, Land Cruiser is 194.9 inches long, 77.6 inches wide and 74 inches high. As for the exterior, it looks a bit boxy and dull. On the rear end, it has a spoiler and rear lights are LED. Also, it weighs 5.765 pounds so in combination with powerful engine fuel consumption can’t be favorable.

2017 Toyota Land Cruiser – Interior

On the inside, there is a different story. Toyota managed to nicely implement high-end features into the dashboard. But also, it’s a mix of high-quality and some low-quality materials. On one hand, you have leather upholstery, high-resolution screens, but on the other fake wood details, and hard plastic isn’t what you expect from a model with that price tag. But all together this three-row SUV which has space for eight occupants is quite comfortable. Seats are heated and ventilated. In the rear, you have DVD entertainment system with two 11.6-inch display screens and there is also plenty of space.

The only downside of 2017 Toyota Land Cruiser interior is that third row may be comfortable only for smaller passengers. But cabin also comes with 4-zone climatic control while the driver has a leather-trimmed heated steering wheel. That’s not all; there is also a moonroof and a 14-speaker JBL Synthesis® audio system which includes an 8-inch subwoofer and a 605W amplifier.

2017 Toyota Land Cruiser – Engine

Only one engine lies under the hood. And that is 5.7-liter V8 which produces 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque. So, that is a quite powerful engine and with 4WD 2017 Land Cruiser will surely take you anywhere. It also comes with eight-speed automatic transmission. Toyota achieved good off-road characteristics with double-wishbone suspension with coil springs and stabilizer bar up front. On the rear, you have a 4-link rear suspension with coil springs, stabilizer bar, and semi-floating axle. In other words, those leather seats wouldn’t do the trick when it comes to the high level of comfort on their own. And another thing, even that heavy, this model is quite good in handling.

In addition, to improve durability engineers built 2017 Toyota Land Cruiser on a rugged 10-member high-tensile steel ladder frame. That is all nice, but if you are looking for a vehicle with good gas mileage, you should keep looking further. EPA numbers are 13 in the city and 18 on the highway. But with all above in mind, those numbers aren’t surprising.

2017 Toyota Land Cruiser – Safety Rating

As for the safety, 2017 Toyota Land Cruiser comes packed with all sorts of active and passive safety systems. Standard features include 10 airbags, parking sensors, a rearview camera, stability control, tire pressure monitors, and anti-lock braking. There is also collision avoidance system like automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, rear cross traffic alert and many others. Those all come as standard. So, with all of the above and when in mind that bigger vehicles are safer, high level of safety is pretty obvious.

But the thing is that there are no official crash test ratings because of low demand for this vehicle in the U.S. Neither the IIHS nor the EuroNCAP took it for a spin at their facilities. But the Australian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) which is Australia’s leading independent vehicle safety advocate did a while back. They tested Land Cruiser in October 2015, and it managed to get highest, five-star rating in safety.

2017 Toyota Land Cruiser – Conclusion

So, we came to the biggest reason we think that 2017 Toyota Land Cruiser will be popular as models before. And that’s the price. With no customizability whatsoever new Land Cruiser comes with astronomically high figure. Its price is $84.325, only slightly lower than Lexus LX which is, as far as we are concerned, more beautiful and luxurious than Land Cruiser. We really have the impression that only reason Toyota is keeping Land Cruiser alive is its long heritage.
