All car makers tend to increase dimensions of their models to increase comfort. That’s all ok, but the thing is that if this trend continues we certainly won’t have supermini segment anymore. This category isn’t boasting with a big variety of models. And we say this because even the supermini cars are growing. One of those is the new 2018 Audi A1. The new model will be more sophisticated and when it arrives with more technology it will certainly raise the bar for other carmakers in this segment.
2018 Audi A1 – New Platform And Design
Audi is preparing the second generation of A1. The first thing noteworthy is a new platform. The new MQB A0 platform is the base for many improvements that will come. Because of the new platform, assembly of A1 will move from Brussels, Belgium to SEAT’s Martorell plant in Barcelona. New A1 will grow in dimensions, at least in length, since it will be 3.5- inches longer bringing it closer to A3. Of course, that isn’t the only change since what would next-generation be without a fresh look.
The design will evolve with sharper looking headlights and unique daytime running lights. Grille will also get an update, but it will like on all Audi hatchbacks and sedans remain hexagonal rather than SUV’s octagonal. The rear end carries wider rear lights which borrow design from refreshed Audi A3. Designers also integrated roof spoiler to give 2018 Audi A1 sportier look. In addition, new Audi’s scrolling turn indicators will be available but only as an option.
2018 Audi A1 – Interior Features
For the first time, this supermini will receive Audi’s Virtual Cockpit on the 12.3-inch screen. Also, Audi’s updated MMI interface will feature Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Other than that, thanks to the longer wheelbase, level of comfort will certainly rise providing more legroom for the rear occupants. The comfort is also achieved with high-quality and sift-touch materials.
2018 Audi A1 – Engine Lineup
Again, thanks to the new architecture, new A1 will feature new engines. But as for the base engine, most likely is revised current 1.0-liter 3-cylinder turbo with 100 horsepower. In addition, the new model will arrive with a range of 1.5-liter gasoline and diesel engines with output ranging from 90 to 160 horsepower. Although, no confirmation, new A1 might also arrive as Plug-in hybrid e-tron. This isn’t in the domain of impossible since in 2012 Audi introduced a concept with the 3-cylinder turbo engine and electric motor. But that would surely push the price much higher. The front will drive will remain as a base, while AWD will be offered as an option. Some reports say that Audi will ditch the five-speed manual and six-speed automatic. The only option that will remain is the seven-speed S Tronic transmission, but we hardly doubt it.
2018 Audi A1 – Release Date
The new model is expected to arrive in the first quarter of 2018, while the price will surely go up. If we see and e-tron 2018 Audi A1 will be a direct competitor to BMW i3.
