BMW decided to take 1-Series Coupe, add a Convertible body style and change the name to 2-Series. Being the youngest member of BMW lineup, for 2018 model year, a mild facelift will take place. When we say mild, it really is, since there is so little camo that we don’t understand why they’ve bothered in the first place. Even without the camo, only a trained eye or the BMW enthusiast can spot the changes on 2018 BMW 2-Series.
2018 BMW 2-Series – Mild Exterior Changes
As for the front of this mid-size luxury car, we can see that famous kidney grille will be slightly redesigned and smaller compared to the outgoing model. Around the grille but under the camo, there could be a chrome trim. Now shorter headlights also come with new signature as well as new LED daytime running lights. The rear light will also get a new look. In other words, not much is happening with 2018 BMW 2-Series exterior, but the design will follow the new 7-Series.
2018 BMW 2-Series – Updated Interior
The interior of the caught model was entirely covered indicating that some changes will take place. But don’t expect a major overhaul. Totally new design BMW will save for the next generation. But for mid-cycle facelift, we expect new instrument cluster as well as upgraded infotainment system. Other than that, some minor changes will probably happen with materials, but that would be all.
2018 BMW 2-Series – Engine Lineup
Two powertrains will remain since they were updated for the 2017 model year. One is the same of the 3-Series, a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder gasoline engine (230i). It produces 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The other, more powerful one is the 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine that was upgraded for 2017 model year (M240i). It came very close to a number of horsepower of the M2 model, and in one way jeopardizing the M2. This engine produces 335 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. Let’s remind you that 2017 M2 delivers just thirty horsepower more. So we expect powertrain upgrade for 2018 M2.
Eight-speed Sport automatic transmission will remain, with no other gearbox will be on the offer. The new model will come in two body styles, Coupe and Convertible and both come with standard RWD, BMW’s xDrive is optional for $2.000 extra. Safety of 2018 BMW 2-Series probably won’t be an issue since for 2017 model year 2-Series Coupe received Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS.
2018 BMW 2-Series – Price
With minor changes, the price shouldn’t go much higher than current, but minor adjustments will take place. The price should remain below $35.000 mark for the base Coupe and below $40.000 for the convertible. Audi A3, Mercedes-Benz CLA-class, Acura ILX and Buick Verano and Cascada are main competitors of this model. It will arrive in late 2017.
