We already mentioned that 2018 BMW 2-Series has output bringing it closer to M2, meaning M2 would be obsolete if the German carmaker doesn’t do something. Well, they will, but not soon enough. Before we get to that we must say what 2018 BMW M2 will bring. It was caught one time at Nurburgring. Although a prototype, we can see what’s going on.
2018 BMW M2 – Design Updates
2018 BMW M2 will get its fair share of updates. Like the 2-Series, the M2 will also be slightly redesigned in the same fashion with smaller kidney grille and thinner headlights. So, we saw the redesigned 2-Series, and except the M2 emblem on front and rear and exhaust pipes, the new model won’t differ much from the base option. The interior is a mystery at this point, but new instrument cluster and upgraded infotainment system are expected like on the 2-Series. Other than that, somewhat better materials could be used to round up the luxury interior.
2018 BMW M2 – Specs
But the main difference which “M” stands for is, of course, the engine. Let’s say first that six-speed manual transmission will likely stay. Which is a good thing since manual will eventually die and we don’t like that. There is also optional seven-speed M automatic transmission which combines two gearboxes, each of them with the own clutch. Rear-wheel drive will remain as the only option. With in mind that M240i brings almost the same performance as the current M2, we said that we’re expecting more output from the M2’s current engine.
2018 BMW M2 – Powertrain
They must do it, but the output of 2018 BMW M2 won’t go much higher. But, every carmaker has long term plans. And there is a strong possibility that M2 will receive more powerful engine. But that will not happen soon. It’s because this update was planned for 2019 BMW M2 CS. But when it happens the M2 will borrow the engine from M3. So this model will be enriched M3/M4 S55 engine. But Germans will detune the engine to bring, not 425, but 400 horsepower.
The 2018 BMW M2 will arrive later this year with certainly higher price than current. The Audi S3 is the main rival of this high-powered coupe.
