The biggest, baddest, and most aggressive road car that Chevrolet has ever built is coming. Numerous spy photos were circling the internet in the past year. And we thought that 2018 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 will debut at North American International Auto Show this January, but that didn’t happen. Pity. Why is that, we don’t know. Then rumors about its debut were circulating across the internet, but later on that. This is what we know, at this time.
2018 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 – Design
While there is no clear picture of how exactly ZR1 looks like, the newest spy photos show us that heavy black camo is dropped. Yes, the swirly wrap remains, but we can almost see every detail of the new model. Aggressive might be one way to describe it, but it doesn’t describe it enough. The first thing noticeable is the bulge on the hound surrounded by air vents. Below we can see new bumper with a lip spoiler. A combination of larger rims and the huge rear wing will provide necessary downforce to keep Corvette steadily on ground at higher speeds. We can see two different versions of the rear wing, but we don’t think that larger one will be on the production model. The interior will be redesigned, but it will heavily remain the looks of the current C7.
2018 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 – Engine
The new model will continue to use aluminum-spaceframe, two-seat architecture that debuted in 2014 model year. Initially, there were two rumors about powertrain for 2018 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1. First one is that it will be powered by new LT5 engine that GM’s developing. But this engine will likely be for next-generation mid-engine Corvette that should debut in 2019. The other one that is most likely is the same 6.2-liter V8 engine but with more horsepower. The current amount is 650, but for 2018 model year, Corvette will join the 700 hp club. Some reports even say that 750 horsepower is achievable.
With more horsepower, there is a necessity for more gears. And GM’s 10-speed automatic might be an option for this sports car. Nevertheless, 2018 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 will be the last model that will have a front engine rear-wheel drive layout. And it’s the last model where manual transmission is available since 2019 C8 Zora will be automatic-only. So, it will surely make a nice collector’s item.
2018 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 – Price
And while we’re there, there are a number of rumors where and when will debut of 2018 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 take place. One is: “Debut will be at IMSA Daytona 24 Hour, in front of the people who have the money and motivation to buy this amazing car.” The other: “at the National Corvette Museum’s annual Birthday Bash in late April 2017.” So, we still have to wait. The number on the price tag is not yet available, but it will certainly be over $100k. The exact number might be close to $120.000 With these modifications, Corvette will pose more threat to Acura NSX, Audi R8, and Nissan GT-R.
