Chevrolet Equinox is more and more popular with each passing year. A testimony to that is a spectacular increase in sales over the last year. Just for comparison in 2009 number of Equinox sales were 86.148, and in 2015 that number reached amazing 277.589. Now it’s in the category of 20 best-selling vehicles in the U.S. Two generations were present from 2005 and now for 2018 model year the third generation is revealed just a few days ago, on 22, September. So what is so special about 2018 Chevrolet Equinox? Well, there are certainly a number of things. This four-door SUV comes with all new design, less weight, more spacious interior and comfortable cabin, more engine options, while engineers also added more technology and safety features. Let’s start.
2018 Chevrolet Equinox – New Design
If there is one thing we should mention first it is claimed weight reduction. Car maker claims that new Equinox lost about 400 pounds, a reduction of about 10%. And they have some facts to back up the story. So, for starters, engineers for 2018 Chevrolet Equinox used modified D2U architecture, since it is one of the key items for improving performance and drivability. As for design, it’s based on what we saw on Cruz, Malibu and Volt. Grille comes with chrome on all trim levels, while on the sides standard LED daytime running lights are found. As for the back, LED rear lights come only on higher trims.
2018 Chevrolet Equinox – Exterior Dimensions
When it comes to dimensions new Equinox is smaller than before. For comparison here are the exact measurements. Wheelbase is 107.3 inches long, so its 5.2 inches shorter. The length was 187.8 inches, now is 183.1; the width was 72.5 and now 72.6 resulting in an insensibly increase. As for the height, 2018 Chevrolet Equinox is 65.4 inches tall, so it’s lower for almost an inch, and that is without an available roof rack.
2018 Chevrolet Equinox – Bigger Interior
As or interior, that architecture also plays a big role. It allows mounting the dashboard lower so the driver has a better view and easier management. We may say that it not only looks functional, it’s also nicely looking. On the center console, it comes with either 7.0 or 8.0-inch touchscreen with MyLink infotainment system, with two A/C chrome vents nicely blending in on each side. Below are climate controls, while behind the steering wheel which has a nice layout of buttons there is large instrument cluster.
Although exterior dimensions slightly suffered, the interior space is bigger. Not by much, but for someone, it can mean the difference between banging their head into the cabin ceiling or not. 2018 Chevrolet Equinox also comes with many connectivity options. MyLink system has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto options while an OnStar 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot is also at disposal for all occupants.
2018 Chevrolet Equinox – New Engines
The drivetrain segment got the biggest change. Former Equinox used 2.4-liter inline-4 and 3.6-liter V6. The now aging 2.4-liter engine is surely out of the question for new Equinox, and there is no mentioning that the V6 will remain either. The car maker is for the third generation offering something quite different. For 2018 Chevrolet Equinox there are three engine options, two gasoline and one diesel and all are turbocharged. The diesel option (first turbo-diesel SUV in North America) is 1.6-liter with 136 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque. As for the other two, first one is 1.5-liter with 170 horsepower and 203 lb-ft of torque. And at this point, the strongest option is a 2.0-liter engine with 252 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. The diesel variant and low-volume gasoline engine come with familiar six-speed automatic transmissions. The diesel variant and low-volume gasoline engine come with familiar six-speed automatic transmissions. But 2.0-liter comes with the new nine-speed automatic transmission. The 2018 Chevrolet Equinox will be FWD as standard but AWD is available as an option. As for the fuel economy, Chevrolet released estimates. So, for a diesel engine is 40 mpg on the highways, for 1.5-liter gasoline is 31 mpg, and the 2.0-liter is 28 mpg on the highways.
2018 Chevrolet Equinox – Safety
We won’t get into much detail about safety features, but 2018 Chevrolet Equinox has numerous radar- and camera-based adaptive technologies. Let’s say that for the last seven year Equinox received Top Safety Pick award every year from IIHS, except in 2014 where it received most prestigious Top Safety Pick+. It’s too early to talk about crash test ratings, but we expect good ones. Nevertheless, there is always room for improvement, which is certainly a must. And the reason is that IIHS is constantly raising the level of their tests to be more and more challenging for every carmaker.
2018 Chevrolet Equinox – Release Date
We can expect 2018 Chevrolet Equinox to hit the showrooms right after its official debut which will probably be in the first quarter of 2017. Price options are not yet available. But they should be as we get closer to Equinox release date. Its main competitors are Mazda CX-5, Ford Escape, and Honda CR-V.
