With some success in Asia and almost no success in Europe, Ford will test it for the U.S. market. In Europe, it debuted in 2013 and has already been revised in 2015 for European taste. Ford sold only 11.000 units against over 100,000 for each of its main competitors. Since Ford hasn’t been present in U.S. with subcompact crossover, EcoSport will fill the gap in Ford’s lineup. Although people in the U.S. haven’t been in touch with EcoSport and its design, we won’t get to detailed about it. But we will go through major improvements of 2018 Ford EcoSport.
2018 Ford EcoSport – Design
Firstly, it is built on Ford’s B-segment platform, that underpins Fiesta. It’s like it is Escape’s smaller brother. The exact dimensions are not yet published, but before the facelift dimensions were: length 158.2 inches, width 69.5, and height is 64.3 inches. It rode on 99.2-inch long wheelbase, and since we don’t expect major variations in dimension, it is roughly the size of Nissan Juke. Further, the list of updated features is not long. Designers revised front fascia with Ford’s evolving grille design that now sits higher while headlights are larger. There are also new triangular fog lights and on the sides new wheels design. The rear lights are also new. 2018 Ford EcoSport will come with four trim levels: S, SE, SES, and Titanium.
2018 Ford EcoSport – Interior
On the inside, this SUV will have a new dashboard. And the main news is “floating” 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system. And it will serve as a home for Ford’s Sync 3 software. This, of course, allows Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility along with Sync Connect and FordPass technologies. There are seven ambient lighting options, and 10 exterior colors are available. The Titanium trim also comes with 675-watt 10-speaker B&O Play audio system, and satellite radio as standard. On the front, there are two USB ports and one 12-volt socket. While the rear seat passengers will have another 12-volt socket while 110-volt plug will come as an option. Finally, Ford somehow managed to find space in the caving for 30 storage compartments, bins, and hooks.
2018 Ford EcoSport – Powertrain
Unlike large variety in engine lineup on European and Asian models, 2018 Ford EcoSport will have only two powertrains for U.S. market. They are both gasoline-powered and one is 1.0-liter 3-cylinder turbo EcoBoost and the other one is naturally aspirated 2.0-liter engine. Smaller volume engine comes with FWD while the 2.0-liter one comes with AWD. While other geography models come with 4-speed manual and 5-speed automatic, U.S. model will come with a new six-speed automatic transmission. And it’s the only option for both engines. The output of these powertrains with six-speed gearbox aren’t yet available. But we can expect the output of around 120 and 140 horsepower.
As for the safety, IIHS didn’t have the opportunity to test the EcoSport. But Euro NCAP did. And the European model in 2013 received 4 out of 5 stars rating. The best rating was in safety of adult occupant with final 93%. Until 2018 Ford EcoSport sets foot in the U.S. we won’t have IIHS crash test ratings.
2018 Ford EcoSport – Release Date
We can expect 2018 Ford EcoSport to arrive in the dealerships by the end of 2017. Even with this move of bringing this subcompact to the U.S. and filling the gap in Ford’s SUV lineup, it won’t have an easy job of attracting potential customers. The main rivals are Mazda CX-3 and Honda HR-V.
