Photographers were very busy and they had a reason. They caught a test mule of new 2018 Ford Focus and now spy photos are available. Focus has a nice legacy dating back to 1998 and it achieved quite a success. A testimony to that lies in the fact that sale are steady and the average amount of sold vehicles is 195.847 per year. That’s all nice, but since the third generation of focus is present from 2010 you would expect that it is already time for next generation. Furthermore, when you have in mind that new generations came in exactly the sixth year, the new one should be upon us. So let’s take a look and see what can we expect.
2018 Ford Focus – Design
If you take a closer look it seems that this is another facelift rather than next generation model. And why is that? Headlights, fog lights, in other words, whole front fascia looks the same as before. The shape of the body is the same. But for the careful eye of the observer, 2018 Ford focus is larger. And that is in term of length and width. You can see changes in width just from the position of the fog lights compared to the grille. The whole car looks like it’s just like pile up of parts welded together. And that’s just about all for the look and this is why.
The thing is that this test mule is probably just a decoy. In other words, Ford can test new mechanical components like new design chassis without releasing any changes to the visual. So the problem is we will still have to wait and see what will 2018 Ford Focus look like.
2018 Ford Focus – Interior
So if you look at the exterior, even if photographers managed to take photos of the inside, it wouldn’t give us the complete look of the 2018 Ford Focus. In other words, the interior probably isn’t representative. But when it comes you could expect larger infotainment screen, updated console and instrument cluster. You can also expect technology that will keep Focus in pace with other rivals who will hit the market same time as Focus.
2018 Ford Focus – New Engine Maybe?
When it comes to the powertrain we can say that new engine might sit under the hood. But at this moment we’re just guessing. The current generation Focus comes with three engine options. There is 1.0-liter three-cylinder, 2.0-liter four-cylinder depending on the trim level. The smallest volume engine has 123 horsepower and 125 lb-ft of torque. Double the engine volume and you’ll have 160 horsepower and 146 lb-ft of torque. The same volume but Ecoboost engine that comes with ST trim has much more power. It produces 252 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque.
And finally, the most powerful one reserved for the RS is 2.3-liter with 350 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque. So there are already enough options but if the 2018 Ford Focus comes with the new engine it will probably be close to the 2.0-liter volume with output somewhere between 150 and 170 horsepower. But it is highly possible that new engine would have much more favorable fuel consumption.
2018 Ford Focus – Competitors
If Ford really is testing new chassis, platform or even a new engine price will likely increase. But since the base price for current Focus is $17.650 even with the increase it will remain one of the cheapest cars in compact cars segment. The main competitors of Focus are Mazda 3, Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra and Toyota Corolla Hatch.
