New Elantra GT is just around the corner. And by the looks of it, this hatchback will be a formidable challenger to Volkswagens Golf, Chevrolet Cruze, and Honda Civic. Although they share the same name, don’t be mistaken that this is the hatchback version of Elantra sedan. No, 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT is identical to European version i30. For instance, wheelbase of the new GT is two inches shorter than one on the sedan. Nevertheless, with new hatchback with more space, more features, and better driving dynamics, Koreans want to go right to the top.
2018 Hyundai Elantra GT – Design
New GT is lower, wider and far prettier than the outgoing model. Also Koreans this time used double the amount of high-strength steel to improve rigidity for 22%. But on the contrary it didn’t get heavier, the body is lighter for 61 pounds. The looks are the same as the i30. New GT comes with same hexagonal grille, but the grille carries all-new cascading design. There will be two versions of GT, base, and Sport. Standard GT comes with LED daytime running lights, while fully LED headlights and rear lights are optional. Also standard are 17-inch alloy wheels, but the buyer can upgrade aggressive stance with 18-inch wheels and larger brakes.

Aside from that 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT has a more upscale look with dashboard design noticeably different than on the sedan, it is also quite well equipped. There is 8-inch touchscreen screen mounted on the dashboard instead of the outgoing 7-inch one. But it is no longer embedded, it has more “floating” design as it sits as a standalone unit. It comes with Apple Car Play and Android Auto. There is also Bluetooth hands-free system and rear view parking camera. The upscale model is understandingly more favorable. There is the same size screen, but with navigation, behind the leather wrapped steering wheel, buyers will get 4.2-inch LCD instrument cluster. And there is also wireless device charging.
Instead of cloth, there are heated and ventilated leather seats and behind the driver’s feet, there are alloy pedals. A panoramic sunroof and Infinity 8-speaker premium audio system will round up the enjoyment. The cargo space is important, and 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT can boast with 25 cubic feet of it. With rear seats folded, the total space amounts 55.1 cubic feet.
2018 Hyundai Elantra GT – Engine Lineup
There are also two available engines. First one is the same as on sedan, a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine, but instead of sedan’s 147, it produces 162 horsepower in the hatchback. The buyer can also opt for GT Sport in which there is smaller volume engine but with added turbocharger. A 1.6-liter turbo engine produces 201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. With this selection, the driver will have Multi-link rear suspension as well. Six-speed manual transmission is standard, but the buyer can also opt for the seven-speed dual clutch. FWD will remain the only drive layout.
New 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT comes with plenty of safety features, but most of them are sadly optional. There is automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind spot detection with rear cross traffic alert. There are also lane-keeping assist and smart cruise control with automatic stop/start feature.
2018 Hyundai Elantra GT – Price
With all these upgrades higher price comes justified. Although it’s not yet available, the starting number on the price tag should be around $20.000. New 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT will be available this spring.
