Discovery is a champion of the British SUV maker when it comes to all-terrain driving. With a legacy of 27 years, that is not a surprise. Sales are slowly raising in the last couple of years reaching a record of 51.008 of sold units in 2015 worldwide. And now comes the third generation, and it is in every way new. This model comes with the new platform, new design, new technology, and the most important, it will keep its all-terrain performance. The list of improvements is very long, so sale numbers will probably sky rocket high, and we don’t think we’re exaggerating. So what 2018 Land Rover Discovery brings new to the market?
2018 Land Rover Discovery – New Platform
Firstly, new platform. This luxury model which comes as Mark 5, rides on new D7 architecture. It is already in use in Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. But, unlike for Range Rover which is all-aluminum, the platform is not entirely aluminum. There is 85% of this lightweight material while the rest are steel subframes for more strength. The result of aluminum use is, of course, weight reduction. So, new Discovery will be lighter for 1.085 pounds resulting in lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. To maintain its all-terrain characteristics, Discovery has 11.1 inches of ground clearance. And you can also wonder in 35.4 inches deep water without thinking you’ll get your feet wet. But platform doesn’t alone make the vehicle.
By the words of design chief Gerry McGovern, “Land Rover is going through a transformation.” The reason is “People won’t accept big panel gaps anymore.” So, boxy design is gone since new model takes many key design features from Discovery Vision concept and that is a good thing. The overall design is sleeker and sportier. Everything was carefully designed for a more futuristic look. And that’s not all; new Discovery comes with 17 exterior colors. So you can choose Namib Orange, Silicon Silver, Fuji White, Santorini Black, Corris Grey, Indus Silver, Loire Blue, Aintree Green, Firenze Red, Scotia Grey, Kaikoura Stone, Montalcino Red, Yulong White, Farallon Black, Waitomo Grey, Carpathian Grey and Aruba.
2018 Land Rover Discovery – Interior
Although 2018 Land Rover Discovery is 195 inches long, it can comfortably accommodate seven adult passengers. Two rear seats are positioned higher compared to the front. And they also have power fold option. This is nothing spectacular if you leave out it can be done from the trunk or even remotely from your smartphone. This can also be done via InControl Touch Pro infotainment system that comes with a large 10-inch touchscreen which sits high on the center console. This system has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and built-in Wi-Fi hotspot which can support a total of eight devices.
For entertainment purposes, there is 14-speaker Meridian digital surround system and a subwoofer. Of course, this is available on higher trim levels. When speaking of those there are four of them: S, SE, HSE and HSE Luxury. Also, on higher trim levels buyers will have leather upholstery, automatic climate control, and a panoramic sunroof. There are also many large storage compartments (the central armrest alone can house five iPad minis).
2018 Land Rover Discovery – Powertrain
The U.S. market will receive one gasoline and one diesel variant. They are both 3.0-liter V6. Gasoline one is supercharged able of producing 340 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. As for diesel, it is turbo engine with 254 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque. Nevertheless, which engine does buyer choose, they both come with ZF eight-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive. 2018 Land Rover Discovery also has best in class towing capacity. It amounts 8.201 pounds.
2018 Land Rover Discovery – Price
The new model will be available in mid-2017, with a starting price of $49.990. But there will also be “First Edition” models, 529 for U.S. market and 600 for U.K. These model will feature aluminum trim for doors and front fascia, unique badges and a long list of standard equipment. But the price tag holds a much higher number, $73.950. Even if that is not enough, there is also available Dynamic Design Pack. This optional package consists of contrast roof, athletic front & rear bumper designs, a fancier leather upholstery and sports-inspired steering wheel and pedals.
Although we are pretty confident that new Discovery will achieve high success, there are other models from this segment that can jeopardize it. Those are Porsche Cayenne, BMW X5 and X6, Mercedes-Benz GLE-class, and Infiniti QX70.
