2018 Mazda CX-5 Diesel comes to the U.S.

Not long ago when we discussed the 2018 Mazda CX-5 spy photos, we hinted that new Mazda SUV might come with a diesel engine. Mazda CEO Masamichi Kogai said that they won’t give up on the idea to bring SkyActiv-G to the U.S. They had a tough decision to offer a diesel in new Mazda 6. “It could be made to drive the way we wanted or it could meet U.S. emissions, but not both,” he said. “We wouldn’t accept that.” But 2018 Mazda CX-5 Diesel does both. It drives as it should and meets the U.S. emissions. The new model might offer segment-leading fuel efficiency and performance. That right, diesel-powered SUV is just around the corner.

2018 Mazda CX-5 Diesel – Revised Platform

We won’t talk about some design features and changes since we already discussed them in the previous post, but we forgot to mention that Mazda for 2017 model year altered the platform to provide a lower center of gravity. Other than that, we covered literally everything that we knew. And by now there is any new information to share.

2018 Mazda CX-5 Diesel – SkyActiv-D

But the real reason is the new powertrain. Well, it’s not literally new, since it was already offered in other markets. And the U.S. will get the same 2.2-liter turbo SkyActiv-D 4-cylinder engine. Currently, it produces 173 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, but with some revisions to injection design, Mazda aims to lift this number more. But we don’t think that the number would be even close to 200. Other than that, the only transmission that comes with diesel is the six-speed manual. And we don’t think that something will change in this direction.

2018 Mazda CX-5 Diesel – Price

Mazda said that new 2018 Mazda CX-5 Diesel will arrive at the end of 2017. While there is no word about the price if new diesel variant would be available in lower trims we can expect that 2018 Mazda CX-5 Diesel might start in the below the $30.000 mark. Without WV in the picture, Mazda surely aims to grab the attention of buyers who wants a good fun-to-drive diesel because this model will be just that.
