2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R Updates, Price

There might not be monsters under the bed, but there are certainly present on the everyday roads. One of them is GT R. As goes the words of Tobias Moers, the AMG CEO when comparing the GT R with Porsche 911 GT RS: “Our car is faster”. When asked where, simply, plainly he responded: “Everywhere”. But they won’t just leave it at that. Porsche certainly isn’t sleeping and that’s why 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R comes with the significant amount of updates.

Before we get to those changes, we must mention that new GT R comes with the same 4.0-liter twin turbo V8. With 577 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, the GT R sprint from standstill to 60 mph is achieved in 3.5 seconds. The GT R comes with greater power than the base GT and GT S, but it has the same seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission. But the gearbox is revised, the gear ratio is altered for the GT R to achieve better performance. In other words, there isn’t any big news in the engine department, but other key elements are surely gone through extensive updates.

2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R – Design and Mechanical Changes

First, the GT R comes with a new face. And that’s Panamericana grille, which was an inspiration from AMG GT3 racer. The Roadster also comes with brand new color, AMG Green Hell Magno. One of the features that Germans have done to increase its stability is wider fenders. Front ones are 1.81 inches wider while the rear ones for 2.24 inches. Other than that, Mercedes also aimed to lighten the car. There is extensive use of carbon fiber in key areas to lower the center of gravity while adding torsional rigidity. Those key areas are a roof, front splitter, and fenders, rear wing and diffuser.

On the rear, we also have AMG performance exhaust. To aid in steering the 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R comes with active rear-axle steering which turns up to 1.5°. Even while forged cylinder heads are resistant to heat, there’s also an advanced cooling system, while the car has aggressive aerodynamics to let it glide to victory. The most notable change, especially from the GT and GT S models, is the nine-position knob. It is first ever nine-mode AMG Traction Control.

There’s also one more model that GT R wants a piece of and it’s the 2018 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1. And while bold claims of Tobias that this car is faster might not be entirely true, there is no doubt that 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R will be one of the fastest cars available.
