2018 Mercedes-Benz C-class Gets New Dashboard

Mercedes builds new C-class every seven years. The first one replaced the famous 190 model in 1993. There were three generations from then, in 2000, 2007 and 2014. It was the smallest car in Mercedes lineup till 1997 when A-class showed up. So if this trend continues we can expect the fifth generation C-class in 2021. But current generation brought novelties in term of the platform. It’s the first model to use all-new Modular Rear Architecture (MRA), extensively made from aluminum and high-strength steel resulting in 220 pounds weight reduction. Apart from that, there are always some tweaks, facelifts, and upgrades in the current model lifecycle, so can we expect something different from 2018 Mercedes-Benz C-class? Well by the look at the photos of testing mule just outside of headquarters in Stuttgart, not much.

2018 Mercedes-Benz C-class – Minor Design Changes

The good thing about the caught model is there is no camouflage at all, but the downside is that German manufacturer doesn’t have much to hide in the first place. But as we mentioned before some updates found their way in 2018 Mercedes-Benz C-class. Designers put focus on redesigning the front and rear bumper. Things they also changed are headlights and rear lights. We hope that they did their homework when it comes to the front lighting unit and we’ll later get to why they should. Now it’s understandable why there is no camouflage. Really nothing spectacularly new.

2018 Mercedes-Benz C-class – New Dashboard

On the other hand, according to available info, there are some novelties on the inside. The 2018 Mercedes-Benz C-class took dashboard from another model in the lineup and that’s certainly not a bad thing. Because the word is about S-class we reviewed a while ago. So dashboard will consist of two TFT displays with no physical buttons between. But the thing is that this novelty will be available only on higher trim levels. Another thing that designers rearranged is buttons one the center console. Not only they rearranged but they completely replaced control for the climate system. Now there’s a button for three-level heating. Moreover, the steering wheel of 2018 Mercedes-Benz C-class also has a new layout with “Master” button on each side. It’s the key feature for entering various settings and controls.

2018 Mercedes-Benz C-class – Same Powertrains

So you can say that usual upgrades will beautify new model. But as for the powertrain nothing will change by the available info for now. Engineers already put tremendous effort in the output of the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. Although somewhat small volume, it produces 241 horsepower and 229 lb-ft of torque. The engine will power the rear wheels through the seven-speed automatic transmission. For those who don’t like RWD, there is Mercedes’ 4Matic AWD for a little extra.

2018 Mercedes-Benz C-class – Safety

When it comes to safety there is always room for improvement and for Mercedes C-class the best thing engineers should improve are visibility of the road, as we mentioned before. According to IIHS, 2016 C-class has one of the highest safety ratings. Both in term of crashworthiness and front crash prevention. So C-class should get Top Safety Pick+. But it didn’t and the main reason is headlights. Although they come in three different variations, two LED projectors and one Halogen reflector. But every variant was rated with a big red “P” for Poor. Now it’s understandable why we said before about engineers doing their homework.

2018 Mercedes-Benz C-class – Release Date

Now we can come to release date and projected price. As for the price is concerned, there shouldn’t be any surprises since there are no too many improvements. So 2018 Mercedes-Benz might remain in the pricing range of the current model, or slightly up. And we will see it in dealership network in the beginning of 2017.
