2018 Mercedes-Benz G-class New Generation

One model from Mercedes-Benz that is pretty unique and doesn’t need any special introduction is G-class. The basic design is unchanged for almost 40 years, boxy and riding high, it is easily recognizable. Even with not so favorable fuel efficiency, it gets the job done. Therefore we can find it in the use of many country’s military or Special Forces group. But finally, it’s time for something to change. And that’s not the only reason why the Germans are developing next generation 2018 Mercedes-Benz G-class from scratch, it’s stricter emissions regulations.

2018 Mercedes-Benz G-class – All New Parts, Same Boxy Design

We can see most of the pictures, and even the Daimler AG Chief Design Officer, Gorden Wagener, said that new G-class will be entirely new. There is only one single piece that will survive the redesign and make it to next generation SUV, it’s the small plastic lip on the C-pillar. But as for design in general, it is best described with the words of Gorden: “You have to keep it boxy. You have to treat it very responsible, otherwise, it wouldn’t be a G. So it still has to be edgy.”

But what is really going on when there is only one piece unchanged. For starters, the new G-class has wider grille, windshield, and hood. It all indicates that this SUV is wider, and around 4 inches to be precise. It was done to accommodate new suspension, thus improving its off-road capabilities while also getting bigger space inside. The new model is also shorter. Another thing that new G-class will bring is less weight. The curb weight of current G-class is 5.556 pounds. But with more use of aluminum in a combination of high-strength steel, this luxury SUV could lose around 400 pounds. Some sources even say the loss of 800 pounds is possible. Even with these changes, the iconic G-class remains as it should, rugged.

2018 Mercedes-Benz G-class – Interior

The inside, aside from more space for occupants, and new infotainment system we don’t think we will see anything spectacularly new. The driving will certainly be more pleasurable with new suspension, while the driver will instead of the hydraulically assisted system have electric-mechanic one in the disposal. Of course, Germans will also install newest driver-assistance systems.

2018 Mercedes-Benz G-class – New Engines

As for the powertrain, there will certainly be changes. There are brand new engines that will be installed for 2018 model year. Those are CLS-class, E63 S, S63, S65, and others. The current 4.0-liter twin turbo V8 in G550 produces 416 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque. We know that the core G550 will receive the engine of the same displacement, but we expect more horsepower. Since over 50% of sales of G-class are AMG versions, they will also stay in the offer. But instead of 5.5-liter V8 for the G63, we should see new 4.0-liter twin turbo V8. It produces 469 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. The AMG G65 should remain with V12. Nevertheless, which engines will arrive, only transmission option is nine-speed automatic with of course AWD. Some say that hybrid drive is also a possibility.

2018 Mercedes-Benz G-class – Release Date

The release date will be in early 2018, and the price should remain close to the current which is $122.400 for the G550. While the Mercedes was ready to put the G-class to sleep the high demand from U.S., Russia, and China convinced the manufacturer to reverse course. If that didn’t happen, and G-class was out of the picture, Lamborghini Urus, Bentley Bentayga, BMW X7, and Cadillac Escalade would be more peaceful when it comes to good sale numbers.
