Small and mid-size SUV segment is surely getting crowded. We don’t need to talk about what Land Rover stands for since it’s quite world famous. But building only luxury SUV’s they want to extend their offer as much as possible. Range Rover has been the SUV flagship in the lineup from 1970. And now, this British manufacturer has just filled in the small gap in their lineup between Range Rover Sport and Range Rover Evoque. It is mid-size luxury SUV coming as 2018 Range Rover Velar. 2018 Range Rover Velar – Design

Well, one thing is for sure, this is the most aerodynamic model they have. With the smallest, slim LED headlights ever fitted on Land Rover, sleek design, and flush door handles design team managed to reduce drag coefficient to 0.32. This, of course, can also be seen when we look at Velar from the sides. Every corner if we can even say corner, is rounded to the maximum. And with floating roof beautiful rear end, we can say that it is probably the most attractive futuristic looking Land Rover model we’ve seen. The slim stretching rear lights also help this fact.

Other than that, Land Rover tried to reduce curb weight as much as possible. Architecture that underpins this model is made from 80% aluminum while the rest is composed of steel and magnesium. 2018 Range Rover Velar has 113.2-inch long wheelbase while overall length is 189 inches and rides on 21-inch wheels. So when size is in question, Velar is much more close to Range Rover Sport (shorter by 2 inches) than Evoque (longer for 17 inches).

2018 Range Rover Velar – Interior

The interior design is done in a way for the cabin to have a calming effect as possible. It is the product of, how Range Rover putts reductionism. While other carmakers move most of the commands into larger and larger center touchscreen, in Velar we can find Hidden until lit controls. This means that buttons aren’t illuminated unless we touch them. So, let’s stop for a second. Although this may seem nice, aren’t the reason of illumination buttons to find them more easily?

Nevertheless, Materials in this luxury interior are of the finest quality as we could expect. Leather seats have established themselves for a must have feature for luxury and comfort interior. Aside from that, Velar will also offer optional woven seat upholstery from sustainable resources. This upholstery will be offered Dapple Grey paired with synthetic suede inserts of Ebony or Light Oyster It is made in cooperation with Kvadrat. This is the Europe’s leading manufacturer of design textiles.

This reminds us of how Vice President of design at Volvo Cars Thomas Ingenlath said when he was questioned about the interior of the next generation XC60: “Do we always have to have leather in a luxurious car? That definitely is a big question for us. We’d love to convince the customers that there is an alternative car interior beyond leather. We’re not trying to pretend. It wouldn’t be a pretend leather. We want to look at different fabrics. But there’s definitely a real challenge to convince customers’ perceptions.”

2018 Range Rover Velar – Tech

Range Rover says that they expect that 1 in every 20 customers will choose optional upholstery. When technology features are in question, 2018 Range Rover Velar’s dashboard will hold two 10-inch touchscreens. On them, the company will introduce completely new Touch Pro Duo infotainment system. They say it will have faster response and improved functionality.

2018 Range Rover Velar – Engine Choices

No matter how low the curb weight can be, there will always be a need for the powerful engine to propel the SUV. So, Velar will be offered with three engine options, two gasoline ones, and a diesel. The first one is 2.0-liter turbo inline 4-cylinder engine which produces 247 horsepower. The most powerful one is 3.0-liter V6. This one has an output of 380 horsepower which is more than enough for power hungry enthusiasts. For those not so power hungry, there is a 2.0-liter diesel which produces 180 horsepower.

Nevertheless, which engine is in question, the only gearbox available is a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. Also, only one drive layout is available, and that is AWD. The company claims that 2018 Range Rover Velar will have 0-60 mph sprint time of 5.2 seconds when V6 lies under the hood, which is more than respectable when SUV is what we talk about. For those who plan to haul something, V6 models are rated to haul up to 5.500 pounds.
