Volkswagen CC had somewhat fulfilled Germans carmaker expectations in the U.S. But all comes to an end. Volkswagen expected about 26.000 of sold units, but if we look at the numbers, they are off the mark. In a span of nine years (2008-2016) Volkswagen CC average was 15.588 per year. With Phaeton also ending its 14 year lifetime in 2016, something needed to change. And they changed it, alright. On 2017 Geneva Motor Show, this German carmaker revealed successor of CC, new 2018 Volkswagen Arteon. And by the looks of it, they hit jackpot.
2018 Volkswagen Arteon – Design
VW’s designed it as a grand tourer, but it really is a large four-door sedan. It is roughly the same size as Passat. Its length is 191.4 inches, width is 73.7 inches and height is 56.2 inches, so we can see that in comparison to Passat, Arteon is wider but also shorter and lower. It rides on latest, updated and lightweight MQB platform. On the front, horizontal six-blade grille stretches from one end to the other, and with slim and wide LED headlights, it emphasizes its width. The design is made with fluent lines for maximum reducing of drag coefficient with a coupe-like roof that ends in the trunk lid.
2018 Volkswagen Arteon – Interior
On the inside, to put 2018 Volkswagen Arteon into premium segment, on upper trim levels there is available VW Digital Cockpit, TFT instrument cluster. Something like Audi’s Virtual Cockpit. There is also heads-up display, while infotainment system comes with gesture control. To improve the luxury experience, there is also LED ambient lighting. Arteon has 4 cubic feet more cargo space than Passat, a total of 25. With rear seats folded, this model can swallow 55 cubic feet of cargo.
2018 Volkswagen Arteon – Engine Choices
There will be a wide variety of engine options. For the global market, Volkswagen will offer Arteon with mostly inline 4-cylinder engines. The first one is 1.5-liter TSI with 148 horsepower. Further, there is 2.0-liter TSI with two outputs, one comes with 188, while another variation produces 276 horsepower. There will also be 2.0-liter diesel, but it is highly unlikely that this engine will cross the Pacific Ocean. That’s not all since somewhat later, there is also a strong possibility that V6 engine finds its place under the hood of 2018 Volkswagen Arteon. Germans will offer FWD and 4MOTION AWD systems. And while the rest of the world will receive seven-speed dual clutch gearbox, the U.S. market will possibly get eight-speed automatic.
2018 Volkswagen Arteon – Rivals
When it arrives later this year, new sedan will have an extremely tough job. This segment is already “reserved” with some of the best offerings like Audi A4, Mercedes-Benz C-class, BMW 3-Series, Alfa Romeo Giulia, Cadillac ATS, Volvo S60, Acura TLX, Lincoln MKZ and many, many more. But when it arrives the price tag number will surely higher than current CC’s $34.475.
