The popularity of Tiguan is slowly on the rise with a record of 43.648 of sold units in 2016. And it’s about to get even bigger and possibly jeopardize some market share of Toyota CR-V, Mazda CX-5, and Chevrolet Equinox. Not only them but this segment is vast with also Ford Escape, Toyota RAV4, GMC Terrain, Jeep Cherokee and many others. Next Volkswagen SUV will hit the shores of the U.S. in the end of 2017. Although it was unveiled in 2016, that wasn’t the model that is scheduled for North American market. How so? Well, 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan is bigger than the model for Europe market.
2018 Volkswagen Tiguan – Platform and Design
We can think of it as long-wheelbase version because it actually is. Yes, it has same MQB platform, but it has a new wheelbase which is 109.9 inches long. Therefore, the whole U.S. model is 4.4 inches longer than its European sibling and 10.9 inches longer than first generation Tiguan. With this, many advantages are there, and just one of them is 57% more cargo space. As for design, Tiguan is redesigned inside and out. With sleek modern lines from one end to the other, it’s a step further in Volkswagen design. Headlights and rear lights are LED and we can’t help the fact that rear lights really spell GT. Architecture rides on 17-inch wheels, but 19-inch wheels are also available. 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan will come with eight exterior colors and optional power foot-activated tailgate.
2018 Volkswagen Tiguan – Vast Interior
So, five or seven seats? Why not both? Tiguan has standard five seats, but with optional third-row seat total amount of passengers can grow to seven. Maybe the third-row legroom isn’t vast, but the second row has the ability to slide up to seven inches making it more convenient for the passengers. The driver could also opt for 12.3-inch digital instrument LCD cluster, Volkswagen’s Digital Cockpit that is. It’s quite similar to Audi Virtual Cockpit. And there is also four display modes to choose from, Classic, Off-Road, Driver Assistance or Navigation. Also available is panoramic sunroof and Fender Premium Audio system. A standard feature is 8-inch infotainment system that comes with VW Car-Net App Connect, meaning Apple CarPLay and Android Auto are standard.
2018 Volkswagen Tiguan – Engine And Safety
There isn’t any mystery of what lies under the hood. New Tiguan has updated version of VW’s turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. It is 2.0-liter TSI which generates 184 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. The only transmission option is eight-speed automatic which transfers torque to front wheels as standard. But also available is Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel drive with Active Control and has four selectable traction modes. As for the safety, there is an array of active and passive features. They come in Front Assist package which consists of forward collision warning and pedestrian detection with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist, and blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert. We also hope while we’re talking about safety that VW addressed “M” (marginal) score in small overlap crash test. But we must wait for the IIHS to conduct a test on 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan to see.
2018 Volkswagen Tiguan – Price
The new model will be available in Europe this fall so it’s coming to the U.S. slightly after that. In Europe, this SUV will come at around €30.000 which roughly comes to $32.000. Nevertheless, we must wait until Volkswagen releases official pricing.
